Why we're bringing the National Emergency Briefing to Bath's business community

This summer made something abundantly clear. Climate change isn't a future challenge we're preparing for, it's a here-and-now one we're already living through. And summers like this one are only going to become more frequent, part of what is becoming continuous change rather than a single event we adjust to and move past.

That's the starting point for an event we're hosting on 12th October at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution.

What is the People's Emergency Briefing?

The film is built from evidence presented to around 1,250 politicians and leaders from business, culture, faith, sport and media, at a high-level national briefing on the climate and nature crisis. It's a distillation of testimony from ten of the UK's leading experts, covering the implications for health, food, national security and the economy. Our screening is one of thousands taking place in communities right across the UK.

Why we're hosting it

We work with organisations on leadership, culture and strategic adaptation, and we kept noticing the same gap in conversation. Business leaders are already deeply engaged in thinking about risk, planning ahead and building resilient organisations. But the climate and nature crisis often sits just outside that conversation, treated as a separate issue rather than something central to the work already underway.

We don't think that gap serves anyone well. So rather than write another report or run another workshop, we wanted to create a space where business leaders across Bath could sit with the same evidence together, and start asking their own questions about what it means for them.

What the evening actually involves

We'll watch the film together, then have space to reflect and talk. That's it. No one arrives as a climate expert, and no one needs to turn up with solutions already worked out. It isn't a campaign meeting, and there's no pitch involved.

What we hope people leave with is a clearer sense of the questions worth asking. What does business resilience look like in this context? How do we think about strategic planning and risk differently? How do we lead our people well through periods of continuous change, rather than a single moment of disruption?

There's also a wider question we think is worth sitting with, about the influence any organisation has beyond its own four walls. Through suppliers, through stakeholders, through the communities it's part of. Businesses that engage with this early are better placed to protect what they've built, and better placed to see the opportunities that come with adapting ahead of the curve.

Who it's for

Anyone leading a business in or around Bath, whatever the size. Sole traders, micro-businesses, larger employers, all welcome. If you've been following the film's rollout, or been to a screening elsewhere already, this is a chance to bring that same thinking into a Bath business context, alongside others asking the same questions.
